Pete Carroll took it to the limit, just minutes before curfew Thursday night, before making his choices known to the USC players who had won their battles to start in the opener Saturday against Arkansas.

Oscar Lua, who had headed off to his room not knowing, had just been told he'd won the closest battle of the preseason camp, edging out sophomore Rey Maualuga for the middle linebacker position...
