Three days before the opener, his starting center -- with whom he had taken the vast majority of snaps -- tore a muscle in his arm and has been ruled out of Saturday’s game.

Through all the early disruptions on USC’s offense, John David Booty has been among the most consistent players on the practice field, according to coaches. A year as the starter and a summer of lifting weights appear to have buoyed the quarterback’s confidence and abilities.

“You’re not constantly thinking, thinking, thinking. Even though you are, you’re not thinking about your thinking,” Booty said. “You’re just playing and reacting like you would have in high school.”...
