Young linebackers starting to establish defined roles - Daily Trojan
Sophomore linebackers Brian Cushing and Rey Maualuga continue to see playing time with the first-team defense, but in Cushing's case it's at a different position.

Cushing has seen the most action as the "elephant," a linebacker/defensive end hybrid position that makes USC's defense more similar to a 3-4 scheme.

It allows Cushing to be on the line to pass rush, but he can also drop back into pass coverage if needed...
