Looking for Mr. Right at U.S.C. - NY Times
Kim Mallory fixed a plate of chicken and vegetables for her son last Friday night, remembering he had given up red meat. She poured him a glass of juice, knowing he had quit soda.

Stafon Johnson, Mallory’s 18-year-old son, is a freshman tailback at U.S.C. If he is to become the next Reggie Bush, the goal of any 18-year-old tailback at Southern California, he must eliminate fat and sugar.

But before Johnson could dig into his healthy dinner, he had to endure his mother’s latest home-cooked warning. “Stafon,” she said, “from now on take nothing that does not come from these hands.”

As Mallory summed up the N.C.A.A. rulebook in one sentence, boosters hovered near her son. Kids waited for autographs. Women snapped pictures...
