Presence of Bush puts spotlight on Saints minicamp - Baton Rouge Advocate
...This camp will draw more national attention than the veterans minicamp in April simply because of the presence of No. 1 draft choice Reggie Bush, the Heisman Trophy-winning running back and kick returner from USC.

The Saints have credentialed at least a dozen national media outlets, including CBS Sports, ESPN, ESPN.com and major daily newspapers and magazines to chronicle Bush’s first three days as an NFL football player.

Bush will undoubtedly be the star today as he holds his own news conference between practice sessions. Things might calm down Sunday and Monday as the initial Reggie-mania subsides...

...the California chapter of the National Organization for Women is calling on the university to crack down on players' behavior.

A Free Ride at Yale? Where Do I Sign Up? - NY Times
...Yale, which estimated that it will spend $4.75 million a year to provide free tuition, has provided significant financial aid in the past. Historically, one student from every teaching studio (violins, trombones and so forth) would receive a full scholarship and others would also get financial aid. But by eliminating tuition, Yale can compete with schools like the University of Southern California...

Fulfilling a promise - Official Cleveland Browns Website
Entering his eighth season in the NFL, Browns cornerback Daylon McCutcheon has the financial wherewithal that would have allowed him to do just about anything to honor his mother on Sunday.

A cruise, a complete new wardrobe, new home furnishings, or a new car - none of these extravagant gifts were out of the question.

But in the end, McCutcheon chose not to spend a dime - not a single dime! - on his mom, Deborah Sterling, for Mother's Day.

Yet he was able to give his mom a present that's forever priceless...

...Friday morning at USC's Howard Jones Practice Field, ironically in the very place where McCutcheon honed his football skills so well that they got him drafted before he received his degree...

...And his mother was there to watch...
Powell goes the distance at USC - Eugene Register-Guard
That no college female athlete in the United States has navigated 10 rows of hurdles over 100 meters of track quicker than Virginia Powell is just one example of her fast-lane mind-set...

..."I want to be the best hurdler in the world."

Eleven months ago, during the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships...Powell blew down the track and over the hurdles in 12.61 seconds.

Powell's time was a USC record and equaled the collegiate and Pac-10 Conference standards set by Gail Devers...

..."I want to finish my four years at USC," said Powell, nearing completion of her work for a degree in public policy and management. "They have stuck by me all this time, and I will have my degree when I leave."...
Sprint for the future - Portland Tribune
...he has taken some heat for choosing the Trojans instead of the University of Oregon.

“I’ve lived in Oregon most of my life,” Anderson says. “People don’t realize there is a way bigger world out there than just being here in Oregon. (UO) is a great track school, but I’m ready for something new. I’ll get the training I need, and this climate is definitely not suitable for what I’m trying to accomplish.”...

...Anderson served as class president as a freshman and sophomore and last year became the first junior to reign as student-body president in school history. If there is an activity or club at the school, Anderson probably is involved with it.

“I’m trying to make myself a well-rounded person,” says Anderson, who says he carries a 3.0 GPA. “I try to be a good person not just on the track but in the classroom....
Claridge death ruled accidental - Las Vegas Review-Journal
Former NFL offensive lineman Travis Claridge...died from acute pneumonia, the Clark County coroner's office ruled Tuesday.

The coroner's office also said the painkiller oxycodone and an enlarged heart contributed to the Feb. 28 death, which was ruled an accident.

Ryan Claridge, a second-year pro with the New England Patriots, said his brother was taking a prescription painkiller because of an injury to his left quadriceps.

"He had a doctor's prescription," Ryan Claridge said. "It wasn't like he went off and took it on his own. The fact is he died from acute pneumonia."

Ryan Claridge said he was upset the media received the coroner's report before his family did...
[Judge] Bush's first pro battle is with the NFL - CBS Sportsline
OK, New Orleans, here's the deal with Reggie Bush: It's not commissioner Paul Tagliabue or the NFL office that determines what number the rookie running back wears this season. It's the rest of the league.

If Bush is allowed to keep his No. 5 from USC, it will involve changing a rule that's been in effect for over three decades, and patience, people...

...Some people will tell you that this one's a slam dunk...but don't believe it. There is nothing easy about overhauling an established idea because the league will demand a complete study...

...if there's to be a change in a rule that dates back to 1973...the NFL office wants to know when it will happen ... which is where this gets sticky...

Families must know NCAA's rules, too - Orlando Sentinel
...Although seemingly every school in the country attempts to teach those close to the athletes about the rules, few, if any, track whether their lessons are learned.

For instance, none of the nine schools surveyed for this story said they ask parents to sign paperwork affirming they understand what they can accept, or how they can act, without jeopardizing their child's eligibility.

Such a move would not clear the schools in NCAA investigations, but it might lessen any sanctions an institution could face for violations...

...At USC, that includes sending players a "Nothing's Free" letter, written and signed by Coach Pete Carroll, that warns against accepting gifts and benefits...
[Fiutak] ASK CFN - College Football News
...Now that all the players involved have moved on the NFL, who had the better college backfield in 2004: Auburn or USC? – BP

A: USC and I don’t even blink. I don’t care about draft position. Going by college production, I’d take Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush and LenDale White over Jason Campbell, Carnell Williams and Ronnie Brown. Even if you’re talking pro potential, I’d take Leinart over Campbell, Bush over the Tiger backs, and I still believe White is going to be a tremendous NFLer...
[Harvey] Pooch Gets Permanent Place at USC - LA Times
Just down the street from the bronze of noble Tommy Trojan, a statue of a mangy mutt has been erected at USC. It's a tribute to George Tirebiter (19??-1950), a mascot whose name referred to his fondness for chasing cars.

Tirebiter, who seems to have roamed onto campus one day in the early 1940s and stayed, sat not altogether impassively on the sidelines during football games...

...Tirebiter, by the way, died 56 years ago — run over by a car he was chasing. One too many whitewalls...

Former Carson players propel USC tennis team - Daily Breeze
...They played together as kids, they played together for four years at Carson High and now they're playing together at USC.

The two juniors have helped the Trojans to the No. 2 national ranking entering the NCAA Tournament, which begins today with a four-team subregional at USC.

"I honestly think it's the best team we've had since I started at USC," DeVera said. "I really think we have a good chance at the title."...
For Trojans, the search to find a setup man is Dunn - Daily Breeze
Entering this season, one of the biggest concerns for the USC baseball team was the critical role in the bullpen in front of junior closer Paul Koss.

It was a void the Trojans struggled with last season, and there didn't seem to be a candidate who stood out.

Then former West Torrance High right-hander John Dunn reminded everyone why USC had recruited him in the first place.

"He's been really valuable," USC coach Mike Gillespie said. "He has really taken up a lot of slack with so many guys down with injuries. He's been able to continually go out again and again. I think he's played 34 games out of 47. He's had no injuries. He hasn't fatigued and worn out."...

Attorney: Suspect Healthier - Las Vegas Review Journal

Cole Ford appears to be a changed man.The former kicker for the Oakland Raiders, who stands charged with shooting a gun at the home of Siegfried & Roy in 2004, appeared in court Tuesday, cleanshaven and with his hair closely cropped. In prior court appearances, Ford was wild-eyed, and his hair and beard were long and unkempt.

Ford is in the midst of a recovery from paranoid schizophrenia thanks to a regimen of anti-psychotic medications given to him at a state facility, said Ford's defense attorney...

..."It shows that in most cases, schizophrenia can be treated."

He said he wants to make sure that if Ford is granted probation, he will be monitored closely and will have to continue to take his medication.

Ford had played for the University of Southern California football team and then for the Raiders...

Bush Inquiry Hits an Obstacle - LA Times
...the inquest has been complicated by an unusual circumstance.

Because founders of the sports marketing company plan to file a civil suit against Bush and his family, both sides have been wary of giving investigators information that could be used in court.

USC Women Look to Capitalize on Depth and Home Court in NCAAs - LA Times
