But there were some bright spots, too. Quarterback Mark Sanchez played better than last week's initial scrimmage while tailback Ryan Powdrell demonstrated why Carroll believes he can make an impact next season.

Sanchez completed 13 of 21 passes for 146 yards and one touchdown and did not throw an interception.

"After three weeks of practice, Mark came out against the No. 1 defense and did very well," Carroll said. "There's still some things he has to gain command of."...
